Important Home Burglary Statistics
Home Security is one of the most important investments that homeowners can make to ensure the protection of their homes, families, and livelihoods. Usually, security devices are purchased after a burglary has already occured. This is especially unfortunate, as these events really can be prevented with only a bit of prior preparation. In this blog post, the residential locksmith and residential security experts here at King Locksmith will detail some of the most recent and shocking burglary statistics and facts out there.

Burglaries Occur During the Daytime

The most common time for burglary is between 12 PM and 4 PM. Nighttime burglaries between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM are only around 17% of burglaries. Burglars usually understand that they will get less attention if they walk around during the day than at night, and know that many people are at work during the day allowing them to get in and out of a house uninterrupted.

Burglaries are More Common During the Summer

During the months of June and August, burglaries increase in the United States about 10% - this is likely due to the longer daylight hours, and the fact that, like most of us, burglars prefer not to be walking around for hours during the freezing nights.

Burglary is More Common in Rural States than States with Big Cities

States like New York and California actually have LESS burglaries than the State of New Mexico (the one with the highest level of burglaries) as well as Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

A Burglary Occurs Every 23 Seconds

There’s about 3 burglaries a minute in the United States, with it being the second most common crime, just behind larceny-theft. That adds up to 3,757 burglaries a day!

The Bedroom is the Burglary HotSpot

In a study conducted in 2017 in which professional burglars were given a simulated virtual burglary scenario, burglars skipped downstairs living areas and headed straight to the upstairs bedrooms where they looked for cash and jewelry. They usually grabbed any valuable objects or items that could fit into their pockets rather than large items that would garner attention towards them being carried down the street.

The Average Burglary Results in a Loss of $2,416

The FBI says that if you get robbed you are likely to lose about $2,416 which can add up to a few weeks or even months of pay! This is especially devastating for those who live paycheck to paycheck, making burglary FAR, FAR from a victimless crime.
